Training Tips

February 20th, 2010

Here are some simple tips to help you with dog leash training. Training a puppy is generally easier, however leash training an older dog is also possible, but generally harder because the old habits have to be broken and new ones learned.  This dog training advice is simple, but it is the same technique effectively used everyday in dog obedience school, and here it is:

If the dog applies any tension on the leash, don’t walk forward, become a rock. And while walking, if you see the dog is about to pull then stop immediately.

When the dog turns to see what happened to you, now is your chance to praise him for paying attention that is part of his training.  The dog will realize there is a problem and turn to look at you. Dog behavior training is a lot easier when you understand one simple rule. Dog behavior is such that they are eager to please.

Now encourage him to return to the heel position next to you. This is all part of how you can teach your dog to walk on a leash. As you walk, as long as the dog is in the correct spot, continue to praise him, even providing treats if you wish. This type of dog training seems simple, but it does work.

Training dogs does not have to be hard, dog leash training, or general dog obedience training just needs to be consistent and applied with love and understanding.  Ideally you will be employing this technique as part of puppy training, however this form of  obedience training works for dogs of any age, but be patient, remember that in older dogs it will take longer because old habits die hard.  Stick with it, and best of luck to you.

Dog Leash Training – the basics

February 20th, 2010

Dog leash training as simple as it sounds is an aspect of dog obedience that some have a hard time with. Leash training a dog is more about understanding your dog then selecting the correct dog training leash, in short you need to develop some of the skills of a dog behaviorist.

If you have seen Cesar Millan’s show, his dog whisperer leash training methodology is based on understanding how the dog thinks and responds. Dog leash training ideally starts early, as puppy training and also part of dog socialization. Many people make the mistake of stopping puppy training once housebreaking is mastered. House training dogs is of course very important, but once you know how to train a dog to walk on a leash, then you and your companion can travel together and really enjoy each others company. Eventually you may feel you would like to give your friend even more freedom, and you can with proper off leash dog training, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, first things first.
